Introduction

One night in the late winter of Introduction

One night in the late winter of 1994 when I was 30 years old,

I gave a ride to a woman I barely knew.

Her name was Rachel.

She had recently joined a theater group where I was a member and she had no car.

I volunteered to drive her home, which turned out to be a rundown old warehouse in a rough part of Oakland. We sat talking in the car for a minute or two. She was
