Half century ago, there was in our imperfect country some prevailing sense of the common good

that could provide the basis for uniting our very diverse people to a very considerable extent.

That notion of the common good derived from the Cold War,

which was distorted, but nonetheless derived from the conviction that we were indeed engaged in this epic confrontation between freedom and slavery and the God fearing and the Godless and so on.

That notion of a common good disappeared after the Cold War,

and therefore the glue to hold us together no longer existed.

And we need to recover that.

My own suggestion is it the way the means to recover that is offered in climate change.
