Summary

Trump, MAGA, and US foreign policy

Kate Andrews speaks to Damir Marusic, assignment editor at The Washington Post and co-founder of Wisdom of Crowds. They examine Donald Trump’s surprising foreign policy moves in his second term: his position on the Israel-Gaza conflict, why he's armed Ukraine despite MAGA frustration, and whether his instincts are reshaping Republican foreign policy for good.

I'm delighted to be joined by Demer Marusich, assignment editor at the Washington Post,

0:16.7

and co-founder of Wisdom of Crowds. Demir, hi.

0:19.9

Hi, Kate.

0:20.7

Demir, we've had news that the Trump administration and Israel have pulled out of ceasefire

0:25.2

talks in Qatar, as the president has said that he didn't believe that Hamas really wanted

0:30.1

to make a deal.

0:31.9

The news comes as there are reports flooding in that Palestinians are starving to death as

0:36.5

this war rages on. In terms of this most

0:39.4

0:44.6

for the better part of two years? Does it fundamentally change the situation? No, I mean, we've

0:50.7

1:31.8

You know, it's difficult to say that they are, in fact, causing some of these stampedes at the food distribution sites.

1:38.2

But it's certainly in their interest at this point to not compromise, to not get to some kind of ceasefire that will lift the pressure on them

1:45.7

because they're willing to actually sacrifice the lives of their civilians at this point.

1:50.6

So I think that's something that is new. And as we try and sort of think of what next steps

1:55.7

might be for this war, it is important to understand that from Hamas perspective, they are signaling that they can hold out even longer, and the civilian population will suffer through this.

2:09.3

And yet, it's very difficult to describe that as a stalemate. As you say, they are signaling that they're going to stop Israel from advancing as far as
