Summary

Later this month, Alex will set out to climb the Taipei 101 skyscraper, but he certainly won’t be the first. For the last three decades, Alain Robert has been the living legend of the underground scene of climbing buildings. Arrested more than 170 times, his passion for buildings stemmed out of his passion for cutting edge free soloing. His tick list featured routes Alex wouldn’t dare to touch today.  Watch Climbing Gold on YouTube Thanks to our sponsors The North Face Check out Summit Series at thenorthface.com  LMNT  Get your free LMNT Sample Pack with any purchase at www.drinklmnt.com/climbinggold. Alex, you were back in the valley this fall. You spent some time on the side of L-Cap and on the side of Middle Cathedral. What is your sort of go-to comfort piece of clothing?

0:10.8

I just spent six days on the wall with Tommy climbing L-Cap. And my evening routine that just screamed indulgent comfort like this is beautiful is I would take off my harness and my climbing pants and I would

change into long johns and down like puffy pants and then and then just put a slinger on my

waist and then and then I put my big puffy on top it's basically my Antarctic style puppy and then

0:31.3

you just feel like you're wearing a sleeping bag and you can just sit around on the ledge and just like

0:34.8

watch the moon rise you are a California climber through and through. Yeah, it was chilly though. Basically, I'm just using the advanced mountain kit. And actually, I found that it really made a difference because we were getting up way before sunrise because we wanted to be climbing as soon as it was light. And if you're trying to get out of your sleeping bag at 4.30 in the morning, you kind of want the big layers because you just want to feel totally warm. The North Face has you covered. Discover

1:08.3

month for you. How are you? You know? Most of us are like working off nursing hangovers

1:13.7

and stuff like that to kick off the new year. But what are you doing in this new year?

1:17.7

I am prepping to free solo Taipei 101. This is a giant skyscraper in Taiwan. I've been

1:22.9

sort of in full training road for the last month and a half and pretty fired up.

1:27.6

What is that even in Taylor? Like when you say that, you're like, I'm soloing a skyscraper. Like, what does that actually entail? Well, it's same as soloing anything else. You walk up to the base, you hop onto the building, and then you climb all the way to the top with no ropes, no gear, no margin for error. You know, it's a, yeah, it's basically like soloing a really cool desert tower, except it's 1,700 feet

1:48.0

tall and it's overhanging steel and glass.

1:51.0

It's so cool.

1:52.2

Yeah, and live on Netflix.

1:54.8

Oh, yeah, live on Netflix.

1:56.0

That part.

1:57.2

Yeah, that part.

1:58.1

But actually, that part is funny.

1:59.5

In terms of the actual experience, for me, I mean, that's kind of the least relevant part of the experience, you know, because I'll just be climbing and then I'll have a couple of my friends around filming at various places. And yes, it'll be going live on Netflix, so that is kind of crazy. But, you know, obviously, I won't be watching it because I'll be up there climbing, so. Yeah. on this project or some sort of version of this project for as long as I've

2:22.0

known you.

2:23.0

You have quite a bit of experience climbing buildings, which I don't think most people know.
