We are into the second week, ladies and gentlemen, of the carnage that is going on in Afghanistan after the United States of America

decided to walk away from the troubled region, leaving chaos and human misery in their way.

Because the Taliban sets about tightening its grip on the country.

British and American troops are holding an uneasy peace at Kabul airport

as they endeavored to ferry thousands of desperate people onto planes and to freedom in the west.

President Joe Biden said last night that the US had airlifted tens of thousands of people

to safe havens in Europe and in the Gulf,

but refused to be moved on whether he will actually extend the deadline of August the 31st

when all US forces will once again be withdrawn.

Boris Johnson is preparing to urge him to stay longer at an emergency G7 meeting tomorrow.

He's being urged to make it Britain's absolute and utter mission to ensure that all the people that need to get out can get out.

We'll be going live this morning to Kabul Airport where there has already been a gun battle

between Afghan security forces and Allied troops.

We'll be speaking to the independence defence and diplomatic editor Kim Sengupta,

who's been there since last week witnessing the misery, the desperation and even the deaths

as the crowd surged towards planes in the hopes of getting on and going anywhere just to get away from what they obviously feel would be certain death.
