Okay, I'm very excited to share this episode with horror author Paul Tremblay with you.

But I want to talk about horror a little bit and just what I've been thinking about it

lately. I mean, horror obviously has a huge part to play in my life and my creativity. Not only do I

love reading horror and I always have since I started reading books, I mean, even, I suppose, some of those early picture books I've read could be classified

as like children's horror, the monster at the end of this book, which Paul and I talk about,

Lamont, the lonely monster, Monster Island, monsters, monsters, monsters, obsessed with monsters.

However, it also plays a role in my creativity, my writing, my novel that's

coming out next year. Hawk Mountain has some horror themes in it. I love watching horror movies.

I love talking about fear and darkness and evil. And you might wonder why. I mean, I certainly do, but, you know,

it's because it's endlessly opening up to me new things to think about, new things to consider.

And so one of the things that's been on my mind lately is this quote from the German philosopher,

Walter Benjamin. And Walter Benyemine.

And Walter Benyemine said or wrote,

the state of emergency we live in is not the exception but the rule.

The state of emergency we live in is not the exception but the rule.

And as I was thinking about horror before I had my conversation with Paul, I was thinking, you know,

can't we also say that the state of horror is not the exception but the rule? The aberration,

the apparition, I like my Freudian slip there. The aberration is not that things are not

horrific.

Actually, there's kind of a low hum of horror always happening.

So it's not that it's always on for us.
