Hi, this is against everyone with Connor Habib, a podcast featuring my conversations with

countercultural figures and presenting complex, philosophical, spiritual, and political ideas in an

engaging and accessible way. Well, I'm going to get into the episode in a minute, but I want to

start with Owen Barfield. Owen Barfield might be someone that you don't know,

but you do know Owen Barfield's friends,

J.R. Art Hoken, and C.S. Lewis.

Barfield was part of this group called The Inklings,

along with Charles Williams.

These are sort of the core members of this group,

and they would meet and discuss literature and philosophy and what was on their minds.

They had a great influence on one another.

Barfield, he was a devotee of Anthroposophy and Rudolf Steiner,

and as a result, Rudolf Schneider ended up permeating

in a lot of the works of the other inclings, or Rudolf Steiner's thought, and esoteric Christianity.

I love Owen Barfield, and maybe one day I'll do a whole episode just about Owen Barfield.

But mostly, I want to bring up something

he said about language once. He was a pretty great philosopher. He also wrote about poetry

and language often. But the thing he said about language that really strikes me, and I'm going to

get it wrong, I think I can get the quote wrong, but I'm going to get it wrong, I think I can

get the quote wrong, but I'm going to say it in a way that is, I hope, understandable to everybody

without the context, which is that there's a tension between subjective experience and exact
