I pray that your hearts are getting ready for Christmas Day as you remember this time

as the glorious coming of Jesus to earth

and all that it means for you and me. When the wise men finally arrived in Jerusalem, they stopped

to ask King Herod where they could find the king. You see, King Herod was king over the Israelites

at this time. The Israelites were also called Jews.

The word Jew comes from Judah, since Judah was one of the major tribes of Israel.

King Herod had been placed as king over the Jews by the Romans.

The Romans were really the ones in charge over the Jewish people.

When Herod heard the wise men ask about a king that

had been born among the Jews, he was disturbed. Why, you ask? Well, because Herod was a bad king,

and he did not want the threat of anyone taking his throne or his power. He didn't know that

Jesus had come to bring a heavenly kingdom. So Herod called together all of the chief priest and teachers of the law and asked them where the Messiah was to be born.

So the chief priest and the teachers of the law opened up the scriptures to Micah, and there they found his prophecy where he said,

But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah,

for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.

Herod thought, Who was this baby who could grow up to be king and take away his leadership?

He sent them to Bethlehem and said, go and search

carefully for the child, as soon as you find him, report to me so that I too may go and worship

him. Herod lied to the wise men. He did not want to worship Jesus. He wanted to find out where Jesus
