The motto of my hometown of Richmond, Virginia is,

Sikatua Astra, Latin for,

Thus Journeyed to the Stars.

A reference to the James River that flows through the city

and its origins somewhere high in the mountains toward the sky.

The river's fault line is my hometown, making all the rapids run through Richmond.

It's the point where the river comes out of the mountains and heads to the ocean.

The James River is the reason I make their trek back to Richmond every spring.

It starts around early April when that beautiful stream takes on different color and rhythm

as millions of herrings started making them way up the river to spawn.

As the weeks go on, the density of fish becomes so thick,

I used to think you could walk across the

river on their backs. It's a magnificent site and if you needed just one reason to

visit Richmond well there you go. Even though I'm within reasonable driving

distance from my hometown I don't have a need to go back.

I avoided going home since my folks passed, and anytime I get near the river, it's emotional for me.

Over 40 years after leaving, the only things that call me back home are the river.
