Summary

The dynamic duo of Todd and Carl engage in a fascinating discussion with Caleb Morell, assistant pastor at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and author of the book, A Light on the Hill: The Surprising Story of How a Local Church in the Nation's Capital Influenced Evangelicalism. They explore the rich history of Capitol Hill Baptist Church, located just blocks away from the center of American power, its rich 150-year history, and its significant influence on evangelicalism in America.  Caleb shares insights into the church's resilience, its response during historical challenges, and the importance of faithfulness to the gospel in a changing cultural landscape.  There’s something really practical to take away from history. – Caleb Morell Don't miss this enlightening conversation that will encourage listeners to invest in their local churches and preserve the gospel for the next generation. We are pleased to award three listeners a copy of Caleb’s book, courtesy of our friends at Crossway Books. Congratulations to James W. from Dawsonville, GA, Cary S. from Plano, TX, and Joshua T. from Kansas City, MO!

Thank you. You are listening to Mortification of Spin. My name is Todd Pruitt. I'm the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harrison Bird, Virginia.

And I'm joined, as always, by my friend and co-host Carl Truman, who is a professor at Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania, on his way to spend a year with the Roman Catholics at Notre Dame.

And I just can't wait to kind of get routine progress reports on that. Just to see who, you know, if Carl can work towards some

timely conversions over there. And, you know, Carl's given assurances that he is not going to convert. So I feel

pretty good about that. You know, Carl, can you, can you help us just encourage us with that

a little bit? Absolutely. And I, as I was mentioning earlier, I had the sad duty of being,

or the privileged duty, I'm not quite sure, of being at the funeral of a dear

Roman Catholic student recently who tragically and suddenly died after his graduation at Grove.

And I was struck as always in such situations. Part of me with the liturgy and the beautiful way,

the funeral service was put together.

2:02.9

I find it hard to find anything, certainly in Presbyterianism, that can match the beauty,

2:10.2

the exalted beauty of such a service.

2:12.4

Right.

2:13.2

And yet the other half of it is so distant from plain scriptural teaching for me that I always come away.

2:22.5

I wouldn't say conflicted because I don't really feel a conflict, but I come away thinking I can see the attraction.

2:28.5

Right.

2:29.0

But the bottom line is I just can't go there.

2:32.0

Right.

2:32.5

Right.

I can't pray for his soul now because it's appointed for a man once to die and then face
