Summary

It’s no secret that addictive digital technologies like smartphones and social media apps are harming a generation of kids socially, mentally, and even physically. But a workable solution seems elusive. After all, don’t kids need phones, and won’t they be vulnerable or socially isolated without tech? Clare Morell, author of the new book, The Tech Exit: A Practical Guide to Freeing Kids and Teens from Smartphones, argues that the answer is no.  A smartphone-free childhood is necessary to effectively protect our kids. – Clare Morell Carl and Todd engage in a thought-provoking and vitally important discussion with Clare, fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and director of its Technology and Human Flourishing Project. Together, they touch on critical issues surrounding smartphones and their impact on children and teens. The smartphone with the combination of social media is, I think, the most destructive technology we’ve ever put in the hands of our children…ever. – Todd Pruitt Clare argues that there is a better way! Tune in for practical strategies parents can take to free kids from smartphones, even if you’ve already given them, and how to sustain that lifestyle over the long term.    We are pleased to award three listeners a copy of Clare’s book, The Tech Exit, courtesy of Penguin Books. Congratulations to our listeners: Chance W. from Hattiesburg, MS, Peder H. from Bozeman, MT, and Warner L. from Notre Dame, IN!    Show Notes: To order Clare’s book and access a discussion guide for the book, as well as a practical tip sheet: https://thetechexit.com  Clare’s blogging platform https://claremorell.substack.com You can find Clare at the Ethics & Public Policy Center https://eppc.org/author/clare_morell/

Welcome to Mortification of Spin, a casual conversation about things that count with Carl Truman and Todd Pruitt, a podcast of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

0:29.2

Let's join this week's conversation.

0:31.6

Thank you. Welcome to Modification of Spin. My name's Carl Truman. I'm professor at Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania and this year serving as a visiting research fellow at the University of

0:59.2

Notre Dame in Indiana. And I'm here as always with my close friend and longtime podcast colleague,

1:08.8

the Reverend Todd Pruitt, who is pastor of Covenant PCA in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

1:15.6

Good to be with you, Todd.

1:17.5

Good to be with you, Carl.

1:18.5

Now, I want to call attention to something that our listeners didn't get to hear.

1:24.7

Just before we came on, you were mocking the notion that I am a

1:31.4

descendant of John Knox, as though that might not be true.

1:37.3

Well, my theory is that genealogy is for conservative Christians, what reincarnation is for

1:43.1

people out there, that nobody's ever a boring

1:46.3

person who's been reincarnated. They're always Marie Antoinette or John F. Kennedy. So you just

1:52.7

happen to be genealogically connected to John Knox. I guarantee there are lots of really

1:58.4

boring people in my family line. And in fact, in fact, once my father's

2:05.7

family moved over from Scotland to the United States, they went from Presbyterianism to

2:15.4

Pentecostal Holiness.

2:20.4

And I'm the one who broke that.

2:25.0

So you're a return to the family tradition as established in the 16th century. Getting back, I have a lot of Presbyterian pastors in my family background when we were still in Scotland.

2:32.1

Interesting.

2:33.3

Yeah, exactly.

2:34.1

So I go back to John Knox.
