James Beck Gordon, Jim to those who knew him, was born on July 14, 1945, and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles.

Passing up a music scholarship to UCLA, Jim opted to go straight into his professional career,

and in 1963, at the age of just 17, began backing for the Everly Brothers.

Eventually, he cemented himself as one of the most sought-after recording session drummers in the area.

An in-demand and versatile musician, James was the protege of Hal Blaine, was part of Phil Spector's

infamous studio ensemble, and recorded on a handful of notable albums like Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys,

Jean Clark with the Gosden Brothers, The Notorious Bird Brothers, and in the hit, Classical Gas by Mason Williams.

In fact, at the height of his career, Jim was reportedly so busy that he flew back to Los Angeles from Las Vegas every single day,

to do two or three sessions and then would return that night to play an evening show at Caesar's Palace.

In 1969 and 1970, Jim toured as part of the backing band for Delaney and Bonnie,

which at the time included Eric Clapton.

And together, the pair of men, along with a few others, formed their own band called Derek and the Domino's.

Their first studio work was as the house band for George Harrison's three disc set,
