So my guest today is Ocean Vuong. He has a new novel out called The Emperor of Gladness.

It is available from Penguin Press. The Emperor of Gladness tells the

story of High, a young man from the town of East Gladness, Connecticut. He is 19. He is struggling

with addiction and suicidality. And he ends up in an unlikely friendship with an elderly widow who is

slowly succumbing to dementia.

High becomes her roommate and caregiver while he also is working at a local restaurant.

The Emperor of Gladness is a novel with a lot to say about life on the margins in contemporary

America.

It is a story about labor and loneliness and chosen families and small moments of grace.
