Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, February 28th.

Both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump easily won their respective primaries in Michigan last night.

But it wasn't a completely smooth ride, with both results bringing up some pretty serious issues for their campaigns.

Biden had to overcome an activist push in the state that was

encouraging people to vote uncommitted rather than for the president, to protest his stance on Israel's

war in Gaza. And Trump took a bit of a hit with Republican voters, with a sizable chunk of them not casting

their ballots for him, which could be worrying his team a little, as Michigan was one of the

handful of states that swung from supporting Trump in 2016 to Biden in 2020.

Trump's win is yet another blow for fellow GOP candidate Nicky Haley though,

as momentum builds ahead of Super Tuesday next week but Haley says it's not over yet.

We've only seen a handful of states vote. I mean look I have said this before as much as the

media wants to jump ahead we're taking this one state one day at a time.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he's optimistic that Congress can reach a

deal to keep the government funded.

Under no circumstances, there's anybody want to shut the government down, so I think we can

stop that drama right here.

His comments to reporters came after he and three other congressional leaders met with President Biden at the White House yesterday, ahead of the first funding deadline this Friday.

But despite optimism from both sides of the aisle,

CNN's Maloney's Sonona tells us it's far from being a done deal.

At issue is that Speaker Mike Johnson has been under immense pressure from his right

flank to fight for a number of conservative policy wins.
