Life-threatening fires are devastating parts of L.A. County, and officials warn the worst is yet to come.

Winds nearing 100 miles an hour continue to gust across Southern California as crews try to fight

the palisades, Eton and Hearst fires.

None of those are contained, and a spokesperson for Cal Fire said new blazes are popping up all the time, burning through areas quickly.

CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam has more on what's to come.

Joe, the next few hours are going to be absolutely critical for the firefighting efforts

on the ground in Los Angeles County.

This is when we anticipate the peak of the Santa Ana Wind event to occur with some winds

easing through the course of the afternoon, but then picking up an intensity overnight

tonight again with the dry vegetation in place, the fire threat continues through Thursday at least.

Tens of thousands of people have been urged to leave their homes and flee, with many

having to abandon their cars because of the flames and smoke, like these women who spoke

to KABC.

I just had to get out of my car and start walking.

The smoke is so bad.
