Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, January 8th.

Tens of thousands of people have been told to evacuate, as a fast-growing fire destroys homes in Los Angeles.

The out-of-control Palisades fire is blazing through about five football fields a minute,

and there are warnings the worst is yet to come because of life-threatening

and, quote, tornado-like winds.

Many people were forced to abandon their cars in the seaside Pacific Palisades neighborhood,

as traffic made it hard to flee.

CNN's Natasha Chen described driving through the flames on the highway.

I'm hearing an explosion on my right.

There are houses on fire right up against the road on the left.

And so at this point, I'm just holding my breath, and I can feel the heat inside the car,

just watching the embers fly across the windshield.

We got a real look at just the level of destruction and really the

fear that a lot of those residents might be feeling if they're looking at those images on the

news, if they've evacuated, I can't imagine. They're wondering if their house is the next one

on fire, if they have anything to go home to.
