Summary

In this episode, I dive into the strange and often hazardous intersection between capitalism and the pursuit of passion. I'll explore how the pressure to find and monetize your passion has become a pervasive message in our society, and the consequences of treating passion as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. I'll discuss why it's important to prioritize passion for its own sake, rather than solely focusing on its profit potential.

I'll examine the dangers of reducing passion to a commodity, and how this can lead to burnout, disillusionment, and a loss of joy in our creative pursuits. By contrast, I'll highlight the benefits of pursuing passion purely for the love of it, and the ways in which this can bring meaning, fulfillment, and personal growth into our lives. Ultimately, I'll challenge listeners to re-claim their passions from the clutches of capitalism, and to cultivate a healthier, more sustainable relationship with their creativity.

One of the big problems I have with capitalism and the conversation around like finding your passion.

0:06.0

This is something that's always bothered me.

0:08.0

Is the idea that finding this passion, this thing that like you're just called to that you're here on this earth to do is somehow going to make things better.

0:21.5

And I was thinking about this recently.

0:25.0

I actually think it's potentially even more dangerous than I originally thought. So the idea of like finding your passion has always kind of been presented as this thing that if you do it, if you're able to find your passion,

0:45.7

you're going to end up just like living this amazing happy life and you'll wake up every

0:49.6

day excited for what you're going to get to do next and so and so forth and anyone who's ever

0:54.4

actually tried this knows that that's not the case right we already know that

0:59.1

when you find your passion it doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to be

1:02.3

excited to wake up every day it doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to be excited to wake up every day.

1:03.7

It doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to be just like pumped to work every day.

1:10.1

You're still going to have those days that just feel really hard and just feel like

1:15.2

oh what is the point why am I doing this but as I was saying in the intro it

1:21.0

actually I think is potentially worse because I've started

1:25.1

thinking about like why is it that the idea of like passion has become something

1:31.4

that we need to like monetize.

1:35.9

Why is it now a commodity?

1:37.9

This thing that you supposedly love more than anything else

1:42.1

that you are drawn to that you want to bring to the world

1:45.0

no matter what why is it that every time we have this conversation about finding

1:50.0

your passion it's always followed by so you can monetize it and I think that there is a

1:56.4

huge problem here I think that this framing causes a massive massive problem because
