Summary

In this episode, scientific proof comes to light about what works for a leaky gut repair. Leaky gut is when the tight junctions between the cells that line your small intestine loosen. This allows bacterial fragments and undigested food particles to enter your bloodstream, potentially causing an unwanted immune response.

When the immune response is heightened, there’s a greater chance for chronic inflammation to occur, causing symptoms like diarrhea, brain fog, joint pain, and fatigue.

This is where probiotics can come into play to help calm down the immune response and heal leaky gut. Listen to the episode to hear what kind of probiotics to use and how often to take them to improve your gut health.

Probiotics improve leaky gut, very exciting and definitive scientific proof.

0:05.6

Let's break down this recent study that gives us the pinnacle level of evidence,

0:10.0

documenting that in as little as one to four weeks, probiotics can reduce leaky gut.

0:15.6

And if you haven't heard of leaky gut, this is a syndrome that may underlie many symptoms, syndromes, and conditions.

0:24.1

So very exciting. Let's write down the study and then give you a protocol. Welcome to Dr. Rucho Radio, providing practical and science-based solutions to feeling your best.

information without first speaking with your doctor. Now, let's head to the show.

1:12.1

Hi, this is Dr. Michael Ruchot, and let's jump in. If you haven't heard of leaky gut, aka

1:17.5

intestinal permeability, this is when this crucially important membrane of your small intestine

1:26.0

is dysfunctional. Now, as this graphic is depicting in normal physiology,

1:31.2

the tight junctions or the cells of your small intestine should absorb nutrients and police out

1:39.2

and not allow in particles and pathogens that we don't want to absorb.

1:45.3

When we have hyperpermeability or leaky gut, this membrane is dysfunctional and particles can

1:52.7

leak through food stuff, bacteria.

1:55.8

And on the other side of this membrane lies your immune system, and it reacts with inflammation. In fact,

2:03.0

we discussed in the past, this very crucial receptor, amongst a few others, known as Toll-like

2:08.5

receptor 4. When you have a leaky gut and particles leak through, you can stimulate this receptor,

2:16.6

and this receptor will then call the mass cells of your immune system to release their granules full of histamine and other inflammatory compounds, and this is the tie-in between an unhealthy gut and chronic inflammation.

2:30.5

In fact, regarding the anatomy of the small intestine specifically, it's 22 feet in length,

2:39.1

much larger than your 5 foot large intestine, ironically, and the absorbative capacity is huge.
