It's so common for a person to stay with someone in the hopes that they will magically morph into their ideal partner. 

When you meet someone, you need to take them at face value.  Not what you want to see…not what you hope to see.  People are who they are.  You cannot mold them into YOUR idea of the perfect person. 

Sure, you may be able to influence their clothing or hairstyle a bit… sure you may be able to get them to compromise on what type of movie you will watch – but those are the surface layers.  You cannot change the personality of someone.  Again, people are who they are.
