the remains of the day. Where we left off Mr. Stevens had just compartmentalized

the death of his father in order to do his duty as a butler.

Now in the present day he drives into a small town, stops at a market to pick up a letter, and

when the clerk asks him where he's from he replies

Darlington. Was there a Lord Darlington some sort of Nazi got us in the war they say?

And he totally denies it. I didn't work for that Lord.

I'm the butler, Darlington Hall and my employer is Mr Lewis an American gentleman.

This is like Christ. It's like Peter denying Christ. You know what I'm saying? It's a really interesting moment.

It comes up more than once. It comes up more than once.

My first reaction was, wow, that's crazy metaphor, but my second reaction is actually I totally agree because

Peter's whole identity is Christ is based on Christ that is the most important so because

what Stevens is denying here isn't just Lord Darlington. He is denying the key. We just saw his, what I think is his most heroic moment, continuing to serve Lord Darlington at the time of his father's death.

And now he is denying that identity, you know, 20 years later.

I hear the young ladies from Germany have arrived.

Yes, Norwood, they're just outside.

And in come these two girls, and he tries to speak German to them,

and he's very nice to them, and then we hear that they're gonna work there.
