Gates made the announcement earlier today on social media saying he did not want to be a distraction

to the administration after the House Ethics Committee met for several hours yesterday,

trying to decide whether they would release the findings of its

investigation. Gates was accused of sexual misconduct and of illicit drug use, which he has denied.
