Welcome to Journey Through Time. I'm Sarah Churchwell.

And I'm David Ullasoga, and this is the second in our series on the Chernobyl disaster of 1986,

the worst nuclear disaster in world history.

And we're in 1986, the year of the disaster to start this episode.

So, David, last time we looked at how the Soviet system, with its culture of secrecy,

with its corner-cutting, with impossible quotas, created the conditions for disaster.

But today, we're going to see how all of that came together on that one catastrophic night

in April 1986.

That's right.

The reactor number four, Chernobyl, the reactor that is

going to explode, that is at the center of this disaster, had been up and running since the end

of December 1983. And it's worth noting that the start dates for most of these reactors in most

of these plants are in December, because that's people trying to hit quotas and targets

and get rewards

and bonuses for having reactors online within certain years.
