And I'm David Ullushogger. And welcome back to our series on the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

As we all know, the worst nuclear disaster in all of history. And we're going to start this episode in the minutes just after the explosion.

Hodomchuk, who's been killed when the steam separators exploded inside the reactor building.

Many others have been badly injured. The operators of reactor four in the control room,

and those within various parts of the reactor building are already

receiving huge doses of radiation. But they also critically don't know what has happened.

They know there's been an explosion, but what they don't understand, what in some ways they

can't allow themselves to understand, is that the core of the reactor itself, containing the nuclear fuel

and tons of heavily contaminated graphite has exploded, that nuclear fuel and graphite has been

expelled from the reactor in an explosion. And desperate efforts within Chernobyl to prevent the fire

in what is left of reactor for, spreading

to the other three nuclear reactors housed within the power plant are just beginning.

They are all within the same vast building. Reactors one and two are housed together,

reactors three and four housed together. The building is almost one kilometer in length.

A fire in one part is a danger to all of it. It's going to be a night of incredible bravery, but also of denial, of a really quite shocking
