Well, the House now needs to elect a new speaker after Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the job by his own colleagues

what is now the shortest speakership in more than 140 years. McCarthy says he

won't be putting himself forward again and And there's no clear alternative right now,

but a source says House Majority Leader Steve Scalise

has started reaching out to members

but a potential speakership bid.

For his part, McCarthy says he doesn't regret the negotiating he did

with Democrats to pass a government funding bill, although that was what spurred

fellow Republican Matt Gates to force a vote to vacate the chair on the House floor.

Instead, McCarthy took aim at the Democrats.
