Summary

Our guest today is the brilliant Uma Naidoo, MD, a Harvard board-certified psychiatrist, professional chef, author, and nutrition specialist. Dr. Uma's book is called This is Your Brain on Food. It's a full guide to the surprising foods that fight things like depression, PTSD, ADHD, anxiety, OCD, and more.  We go super cutting edge in this one as we talk about the undeniable relationship between our mental health and diet/nutrition. We start with her own health journey and integrated practice before getting honest with a few familiar faces in our cupboards at home – coffee, alcohol, sugar, seed oils, etc. – myth busting and truth telling on what’s good, and what isn’t, for our mental wellbeing. We all know the difference between feeling good after eating good, and feeling bad after eating poorly. Listen in to get the science on why that happens, and how we can design our diets (not restrict them) to unlock our best selves.  We also talk about: Relatively new field of nutritional psychiatry  A lesson from a patient  Uma’s cancer diagnosis and treatment Precision-based integrated nutrition  Connection between mental health and food Toxicity of a leaky gut (and fixing it) The brain chemistry of stress and sugar Fast food and marketing messages The serotonin hypothesis Pros and cons of coffee Nutrition in schools, then and now Gaps in the current medical system  Eat the rainbow  Resources: Read: This Is Your Brain on Food Website: umanaidoomd.com Instagram: @drumanaidoo Join our community: almost30.com/membership facebook.com/Almost30podcast/groups Podcast disclaimer can be found by visiting: almost30.com/disclaimer.  Find more to love at almost30.com! 1:00.0

Our sisters.

1:02.0

1:10.0

Has to be backed up by a nice, nice, nice, nice, on the inside, just like our bodies, which takes us into just, yeah, yeah, yeah.

I saw Dr. Uma at an event and I was blown away by just the concept and the conversation around this because I know for me that my mental health is directly impacted by what I eat.

1:36.0

And there's the conversation around your mental health and your relationship to your body and what your expectations of your body are and your body journey and, you know, that whole thing that's a whole mental health conversation, but then there's like the science of mental health related to anxiety depression, you know, things like Parkinson's or different types of diseases related to the mind or afflictions related to the mind that are directly impacted by what we eat.

2:02.0

And I'm so about giving people easy ways to support themselves and their mental health, especially when it's something like nutrition.

2:11.0

Yeah, you know, I think medication for mental health is incredibly important and so often it's prescribed without taking a honest and thorough look at nutrition, lifestyle, what have you.

2:29.0

So I think this is a really important piece of the puzzle that so many of us are just missing because life is so fast.

2:39.0

There's so much going on and I think the thought of food becomes kind of secondary and just like, let's just consume. I'm either hungry or I'm emotional or whatever.

2:48.0

And it's just kind of this thing that we that we do so mindlessly often and once I became aware of how food made me feel and made that connection with sounds like, hey, duh.

3:01.0

It was like, wait a second.

3:03.0

So I've been feeling like really faulty in the morning and kind of uninspired and like just not myself because of this what I'm eating late at night or whatever it is or I'm not getting enough water or there's just a whole host of symptoms that you could be experiencing and that also could be exacerbating your mental health.

3:25.0

Yeah, as an example for anyone that has anxiety, you could have an iron deficiency. So for people that might feel anxious or might experience anxiety, you can think about different minerals to increase in your diet or different things to support you in feeling better.

3:43.0

And we all know that mental health is so important to how you show up in the world to being on purpose, to having relationships with people you love to having an amazing relationship with yourself and successful career. So all of these like foundational items are key in that.
