Intentional Living, Lasting Happiness
"Have you ever had one of those days, or maybe even one of those weeks, where you feel like you're just... on autopilot? The alarm goes off, you grab your coffee, you go through the motions of work, you handle your responsibilities, and before you know it, the day is over. You're busy, you're productive, but are you... happy?
We tend to think of happiness as this magical thing that just happens to us. Like a lightning strike or winning the lottery. We think, 'I'll be happy when I get the promotion,' or 'when I go on vacation,' or 'when the kids are grown.' We treat it like a destination we hope to arrive at someday.
But what if that’s all wrong? What if a good, happy, peaceful life isn't something you find, but something you build?
I’m Dr. Robert Puff and welcome to “Intentional Living, Lasting Happiness”. This is the podcast for anyone who is ready to stop drifting and start steering. We’re founded on one simple, but life-changing idea: you have to actively work for a life of joy and peace.
In this episode, we're going to explore this idea by coming back to one central, powerful question. A question to ask yourself in the big moments and the small ones. That question is: 'Is what I am doing right now moving me in the direction of a happier life?'
It’s not about perfection; it’s about direction. So, let’s get into it. Let’s learn how to work at it, together."

0:00.0 | Welcome to the Happiness Podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. |
0:11.0 | I live in Southern California. In about 38 miles off the coast of California, there's an island called Catalina Island. |
0:19.1 | And as long as there isn't too much fog out in the ocean, |
0:21.5 | you can see the island from the coastline, and it's beautiful. The main destination that people go |
0:27.1 | there for is a small town called Avalon. There's all kinds of wonderful things to do, and the |
0:32.8 | water there is just crystal clear. Well, I went there this past weekend, and I want you to imagine something |
0:38.6 | crazy with me. Imagine after we left Dana Point Harbor, and the captain started heading for |
0:44.3 | Catalina Island, that about a mile out, he or she turned off the engines and just coasted |
0:50.3 | the rest of the way. Initially, the ship was aimed at Catalina Island, but the captain |
0:55.0 | didn't do anything to correct it when it got up course. We just were going to coast all the way |
1:00.0 | to Catalina Island, the remaining 37 miles. What chances do you think we had of making it to |
1:06.1 | Catalina Island? If you're like me, I bet you'd think they're very small, because all the waves and the |
1:12.7 | currents are pushing and tossing the ship all over the place, and it would have never ended up |
1:18.1 | in Catalina Island. But in some ways, I think our lives are like this. If you're listening to |
1:24.3 | this podcast, it's probably because you want to be happy. We want our lives to go well. |
1:29.9 | And for many of us, we have an ideal of what that would be. It might be finding our soulmate. |
1:35.3 | It might be amassing a large amount of money so we never have to work again. I think a lot of people |
1:40.3 | have an idea of what happiness will look like when they get there. But I also think we're much like the ship being tossed around in the sea with no direction |
1:49.8 | aiming at our goals. Instead of being pushed around by the currents, we get pushed around by |
1:55.2 | emails, social media, and other people's priorities. So we may start off aiming at our island of happiness, |
2:03.4 | but we don't get there. And yet some people do. It is true. Some people arrive at the goals and |
2:08.4 | they get there. And what happens? Well, like I said, Avalon or Catalina Island is a beautiful island |
