If you are a solo consultant, marketer, project manager, or financial professional,

you might wonder how you might structure your company as you grow. This is called

organizational design. As the CEO, yes, that's you. You decide how to structure your company to serve your clients.

But in truth, there are really only a few ways to structure a company. The majority of entrepreneurs

start our businesses as solopreneurs, usually with zero support. Over time, we might add an assistant and a few contractors.

buy back their time at home first and then at work so they can operate in their zone of genius

as much as possible. This helps them maximize

revenue as basically a one-woman show. Now, what happens when you start to get more visibility

and momentum in your business and are at capacity? You can no longer serve additional clients unless you get help. The first step is to

hire out some of the things you are doing for clients. For example, for our clients that are

social media professionals, they might hire out content writing and graphics and scheduling of

posts, but they would retain the strategy

and be the forward-facing person with the client. All client meetings would go through them.

A fractional CFO, who also offers bookkeeping, might hire someone else to enter all the

financial transactions, but finalize the reports themselves and create and present

the analysis to the client. So what happens if you do all that and you're still growing and you want to

keep growing? That is when you lean into an agency model. Now, in the consulting world,

we call this a consulting firm. Law firms call it a law firm,

but marketers and PR folks typically call it an agency. Let's keep this simple. It is all the same
