Welcome to the Happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. This may surprise you, but there's a ride at Disneyland that I think can teach us a lot about being happy. It's called Autopia. If you've never been to Disneyland, if you don't remember this ride,

0:22.2

let me explain it too. It's a car that you get into, or your children get into, it's

0:26.8

more made for younger children, and they love it, but adults do too. But when you get in that car,

0:32.5

you're in control. You can press the gas pedal and it will go fast. You can put on the brakes and it will stop.

0:39.3

You can turn it a little bit to the left and you can turn it a little bit to the right.

0:43.3

But only so far because whichever way you want to go, you're going to go straight forward

0:47.9

on that track.

0:48.9

You can't back up and you can only go where the track is because the car is actually riding on a track.

0:55.0

You can turn a little bit to the left and a little bit to the right, but you're only going to go

0:59.3

the way it wants you to go. And if you go the way that it wants you to go, it's a lot smoother

1:03.4

right because if you go off track, you bump into that metal bar and it keeps you going on the track

1:08.9

that you're on. And even though the kids or you are not in control of that car,

1:14.5

pretty much everyone that rides that car has a really good time and enjoys it because it's fun.

1:20.1

And kids are even willing to wait in a long line so they can ride that car,

1:24.1

even though they quickly realize that they're not in control.

1:29.0

Now you may be wondering,

1:34.8

Dr. Puff, what does this have to do with happiness? I believe our lives are much like the ride autopia at Disneyland, meaning that we often believe we're in the driver's seat

1:41.1

when external factors, societal pressures, etc., influence our path greatly.

1:48.4

But here's the shocking part, or perhaps the good part.

1:53.0

Imagine that we saw life like Oedipia.

1:57.2

Yes, there are some choices we can choose to get on the ride.

2:00.2

We can choose to turn a little bit left or right.
