And I'm Tracy. Hello, y'all. Welcome to the podcast. As y'all will recall, we use the last episode to talk about the geography of the area where the Atlanta campaign opened and how it

influenced William Tecumpsa Sherman's initial

plans.

Sherman may have made his plans for the opening of the campaign, but by the time he moved

his headquarters from Nashville down to Chattanooga in preparation for kicking things off, well, Ulysses S. Grant's grand strategy for the union's 1864

military operations had begun to fall apart. It had, in fact, started to unravel even before Grant

conceived it. As we talked about previously on the podcast in January 1864, the Powers that be in the Lincoln

Administration decided to send a military expedition up the Red River into western Louisiana.

They also hoped to occupy East Texas.

The campaign was a complex mixture of diplomatic, economic, political, and military motives.

Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward hoped that if United States

military forces established a presence in the region, it might help discourage the French

government in its efforts to establish control over Mexico.
