As you guys will recall, we used the last episode to take a closer look at the two armies that would face off during the Atlanta campaign.

Although on the federal side, we saw it was actually what today we would call an army group

under the command of William Tecumseh Sherman, with the Army of the Cumberland, the Army of

the Tennessee, and the Army of the Ohio.

While on the Confederate side, there was just the hard luck Army of Tennessee, commanded by

Joseph E. Johnston. And with regard to the Confederates, we've talked about the bad blood

between Joe Johnston and Confederate President Jefferson Davis and how their issues affected

the rebel strategy at the start of the Atlanta campaign.

Johnston's decision to wait passively in his defensive works at Rocky Face Ridge, covering Dalton, Georgia,

meant that the Confederate commander had yielded the initiative completely to his opponent.
