0:12.0 | Today we're talking with author Dan Millman. Good friend of mine. Author of the Peaceful Warriors way or the way of the Peaceful Warrior if you saw the movie. |
0:20.0 | Today we're talking about his new book, The Four Purposes of Life. Learning life's lessons, career and calling, being two different things and not necessarily something you should merge into one. |
0:30.0 | And more, actually, we're going to talk in depth with Dan about learning life's lessons, the earth, your life as the classroom, and more. |
0:37.0 | Here on this episode of AOC, and with that, welcome to the art of charm. I'm your host, Jordan Harbinger. I'm here with producer Jason. |
0:45.0 | The author of charm brings together the best thought leaders, teachers and exceptional individuals to teach you how to be a top performer in life, love, and at work. We may not have all the answers, but we definitely have some of the questions. And with that, here's Dan Millman. |
1:00.0 | Tell us what you do in one sentence. |
1:03.0 | I write books and I speak where I'm invited around the world. So that's what I do. |
1:08.0 | Well, your modesty is not out of character. However, I will ask you for a little bit of detail on that because you've been doing this for a while, right? |
1:16.0 | It isn't like I should write a book someday. You've been doing this for quite some time. Actually, how long have you been writing and teaching? |
1:22.0 | My first book came out in 1979 to give you some ideas well over 30 years. Right. So not to make you feel old, but the majority or at least a large part of the people listening are like, |
1:32.0 | yeah, my parents told me about that year before I was born or some people. |
1:37.0 | Yes. I hear people say when I was in kindergarten, your book inspired me. So I'm getting older all the time, true, but aging gracefully. |
1:44.0 | That's okay. Look, we've met in person a few times and I can tell you, I really hope I mean as good a shape as you are when I am quote unquote your age because you can't tell. |
1:55.0 | You know, it's funny because aging is inevitable, right? Of course, but there are ways to do it better than others. And I never really noticed until kind of recently, the last few years, I went to visit my parents and I thought, wow, you know, they're getting a little bit older. |
2:10.0 | It's this weird sort of mortality feeling that you get because then you look and you go, am I getting older? Oh my god, I am. |
2:16.0 | Then I went out to dinner with my parents and we met up with some of their friends. And when we got home, I said, wow, Jack and Elaine look really, really old. You know, I guess I just didn't notice and she said they're younger than us by a lot. |
2:29.0 | Right. Well, I guess people do genetics plus lifestyle. We can trigger genes and the telemares and all that. So many things account some in our control, some not in our control in terms of how young we look or feel. |
2:43.0 | It's a winding path. But all we can do is age is gracefully as we can. It brings up a related topic, though, Jordan, because when people ask an author, what book are you most excited about? It's inevitably, hopefully, the one they're working on now. And I'm hard at work on the third and final book in my peaceful warrior trilogy called the Hidden School, which will be out next year. Maybe we can talk about it then. Yeah. |
3:08.0 | That book is going to be dealing with something that will be of concern to so many aging people, baby boomers. I'm not alone in this, of course, but I'll express it in my own way, which is really aging and death and life and appreciating life and how precious it is from a common sense yet existential viewpoint as well. |
3:27.0 | So I hope to present some really good substance within the context of a great adventure story of another quest. So that's the book I'm working on now, but I'm always asked to talk about my last book, which of course is the four purposes of life. |
3:41.0 | Yes. How is the book going? How is the sales going and the promo going and all that jazz? I don't know. They never let me know anything, but I'm sure it's gotten out there. I've been talking it up for a while. But this is the most looked forward to interview pretty much that I'm doing. |
