Summary

How do you turn inaction into action? You’ve got great ideas, supportive people around you and the resources to move forward, but somehow you’re still at square one. Maybe you’re unwilling to embrace the inherent uncertainty of walking the path less traveled, or maybe you need a mindset shift to start building momentum. Whatever your situation, my guest today, Mel Robbins, is here to share hardcore, actionable advice, including her world-famous “5 second rule (watch the Ted Talk if you haven’t already) to help you break out of your rut you’re stuck in.

Mel Robbins is the most booked female speaker in the world, an American on-air CNN commentator and television host, contributing editor for Success magazine and author of The 5-Second Rule. Her TED Talk around the 5-second Rule is a simple framework to turn inaction into action and has garnered over 10 million views.

Mel’s research around the science of habit, self-doubt and confidence drives much of what we talk about today. She’s on a mission to share everything she’s learned.

In today’s episode:

  1. We talk a lot about anxiety. Mel says she was born a worrier, and around age 21, the panic attacks started becoming paralyzing. Not everyone has dealt with depression and anxiety, but we’ve all had gone through hard times. And the open & thoughtful tools Mel shares are useful for everyone.

  2. Mel says “you don’t have to think the way you have to think.” The basis of her book is the 5-second rule, which is taking the world by storm. There is a connection between our wellbeing and our thoughts. Mel and I go deep into her technique the 5-second rule to change habits.

  3. We also get a sneak peek of a technique Mel is currently researching that works every time to help you find your passion, make choices, and audit your life. I cannot wait for you to hear it.

Enjoy!

Hey, everybody, what's up? It's my favorite day of the week, the week where I get to record the show for you.

0:11.1

Big day today. Last week on the show, I received so many messages, high five, shouts, congrats.

0:24.5

Because, if you recall, it was our 300th episode.

0:33.4

And part of the way we celebrated that 300th episode was to release an amazing conversation between yours truly, Ryan Abeo, a hip-hop artist and a cultural critic, Charles Mudadeh. Today,

0:42.2

I want to continue the celebration of 300 episodes by looking back at an amazing early podcast,

0:49.2

one of the most popular episodes ever from a number of years ago. And it made me very curious as I was looking

0:56.8

back on the show and the arc of the show. This, it was a tight, it was a tight decision on which

1:05.3

one of these, which ones of these episodes to share. But again, this being one of the most

1:10.7

popular of all time is with Mel Robbins.

1:14.5

Now, if you're not familiar with Mel's work, she has an amazing and storied pass. She'll introduce

1:22.2

herself a little bit, but she's again, been on the show, everything from a journalist to a talk show host.

1:30.3

She's written a couple of bestselling books.

1:34.4

And in this episode, again, her research around the science of habit of overcoming self-doubt

1:43.8

and building confidence were the things that stood out to me.

1:49.3

And as I look back on successes and failures in my career, the successes and failures of other

1:55.7

people we've had on the podcast, hundreds of absolutely world-class guests, these core components that Mel is world-class

2:05.2

at underpin the most successful outcomes from the most successful people. Again, overcoming self-doubt,

2:14.8

building habits, driving confidence.

2:18.3

And there's another aspect of Mel Robbins that I will say in this introduction, but

2:24.3

if you're familiar with her work, this will not surprise you.

2:28.3

But she is very direct.

2:30.3

And that's my favorite thing about it, aside from the value of the actual information.
