Summary
Hamilton director Thomas Kail is back for round two and he usually makes me cry at the end of the episode, but this time he's switching it up and doing it at the top of the second episode. But don't worry, I deflect and change the subject pretty quickly! Whew!
Tommy is as thoughtful as he is honest, so while he talks about the power of live theatre and offers insight into how and why he works the way he does, he also asks the questions that permeate almost every single project he works on: How much time do I have? And what do I do with my time? Those questions, and the fact that he takes such amazing care of the audience (regardless of the medium) are two of the reasons why I'm so honored he took the time to record with me again, almost seven years after his first visit to the pod. I've said it a million times on this podcast, but I'll say it again because it's true: if you want to truly be seen and heard, have a conversation with Thomas Kail.
And yes, we also laugh a lot and have fun! Tommy talks about his kids, It's a Wonderful Life, upcoming projects (live action Moana!), and why he's never leaving New York City. It's all about balance, mostly because "sometimes you're the Tommy, and sometimes you're the Lin."
This episode was recorded in November of 2025 at WTF Media Studios in Manhattan and produced with Natalie Grillo from Any Moment Productions in collaboration with Meghan Miles.

| 0:00.0 | Hi, I'm Stage in Stages, Lynn Manuel Miranda, and you're listening to The Hamelcast. |
| 0:05.0 | Boots and cuts and puts and cuts. |
| 0:20.0 | Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the Hamelcast. I'm Jillian, and this week, the brilliant Thomas Kale is back to help me wrap up the pod. |
| 0:25.2 | Last week, Tommy unpacked a lot of the Hamilton celebrations and told us how they came to be, like how they landed on the decision to release the Hamel film and movie theaters, his profound experience with the original cast reuniting for the Tony Awards, his word, profound. Leslie Odom Jr. reprising Aaron Burr and Hamilton on Broadway, like all kinds of stuff. He also talked a lot about the Hamill film and how he made it with two things in mind. One, it was a love letter to that unbelievable original company. And two, it's basically a visual cast album. And it is because it lives alongside the |
| 0:54.5 | live show. It doesn't replace it in any way. Oh, and that he wanted all of us to have the exact same seat, which is something you can't do in a live theater. Okay, now that I'm talking about it, he for sure had more than two things in mind, but this is why you need to be caught up because there's no way I can pack everything we talked about into this little intro, especially when it's Tommy Cal. Okay, so last week I ended on the cliffhanger, which is not something |
| 1:14.0 | that happens on the Hamillcast, but Tommy's about to turn the tables on me a little bit before we have a much bigger conversation about the power of theater and about a million other things. And look, I've said this a million times, but I'm going to say it again because I believe it so strongly. If you truly want to be seen and heard, have a conversation with Thomas Kale. I'm so grateful he's in my life |
| 1:32.1 | in this very cool way, and I'm honored that he made the time to record with me to wrap the show |
| 1:36.4 | up right. But there's plenty of time to get sappy. And trust me, we do. But for right now, |
| 1:41.1 | here we go. Here's episode two with Thomas Kale, the 2025 edition. |
| 1:48.8 | Just the ripple effect of the joy that that show has brought to so many people. |
| 1:54.0 | So I'm not going to pry, but I'm glad that it's, you know. |
| 1:57.4 | I'm, it is not prying. |
| 1:59.4 | And not to be flipping uh, flipping any scripts. |
| 2:03.1 | Okay. But, you know, there's always like the time like, and when someone's wrapping up a pod where then like, they invite somebody on to interview them or like to ask them about the thing. Um, are you doing that? Like, who's doing that? Am I doing that? What do you mean? Like when you talk about a thing that's brought people joy, |
| 2:17.0 | when you talk about a thing that has, |
| 2:18.8 | that you put into the world that's brought people joy, when you talk about a thing |
| 2:17.9 | that has, that you put into the world that didn't exist before, that is what you've done. You're now coming up in this moment of transition and you're going to figure out who you are without this thing. Yeah. And you've been thinking about who you are with the thing and going to be... Usually you make me cry at the end of the episode. |
| 2:35.3 | And delving into it. |
| 2:36.3 | Well, I realize there's still enough time to have a real conversation about it. |
| 2:40.5 | But, you know, when you think about the person that started this and you think about the person |
| 2:44.5 | that is now putting this down for a little while, what's your experience with how these |
| 2:50.5 | last few months have been and how are you |
