Summary

Protein, always a hype conversation and regularly misrepresented in the media. Tom (the shows co-host) discusses protein off the back of a popular TV program “Trust me I’m a Doctor” – obviously not an expert on protein though. Tom explores protein, how it stimulates muscle protein synthesis, bioavailability scoring, beginners and experienced lifters muscle growth rates, why you might supplement with it, who elevated protein is good for, and other protein and bad science musings.

Hello everybody and welcome back to Ben Coomba Radio. So you're here with me Tom

0:05.0

I'm the usual co-host but I've been given the reins today to do a short Monday

0:09.4

show to answer a couple of questions that we've been asked over email.

0:13.2

So one of our BTN Academy students who is also a listener to the show

0:19.3

sent me an email around about a week ago to ask me about a segment on a TV show that she'd seen

0:24.9

that related to nutrition. So I don't know if any of you guys will have seen it, but the show is called Trust Me I'm a Doctor and their fourth seasons just started the first episode of which dealt with protein supplementation and whether or not it's necessary.

0:41.0

Now as you can imagine because it is the TV show the conclusion that the show came to was that you don't need to use protein supplements and I'll get back to that in a minute but what I wanted to do is just quickly go over a couple of problems that I've seen in this show

0:55.7

not just because I'm wanting to pull this show apart but because I want to make you guys aware of some

1:00.4

patterns that are really common in things like this so So think of this as me using this as an example to illustrate a broader trend.

1:07.0

So obviously I can't show you the show on a podcast, but fortunately because it's the BBC usually what happens if they do a

1:15.4

program like this you also get a write-up so I'm actually able to go through the

1:19.2

write-up which you can find on BBC.co. UK slash

1:23.0

articles and it's the segment on trust me.

1:26.0

I'm a doctor.

1:27.0

So we'll go through this little article together

1:30.0

and I'll just point out a couple of things as we go because this is something that I think is really important.

1:36.0

So the segment starts with, will protein supplements help me put on more muscle?

1:42.0

Proline supplements were once the preserve of giant bodybuilders,

1:45.0

but today they are marketed to everyone.

1:47.0

They supposedly help us gain muscle and avoid it wasting away as we grow older.

1:51.0

Now that in and of itself there, that's what we grow older. Now that in and of itself there that's what we refer to as a

1:55.3

straw man. That's an argument that nobody really is making. Now to be clear
