Summary

It’s February, and love is in the air—but are you in love with your goals? In this Valentine’s-themed episode, Jay Papasan dives into a transformative way of thinking about goals: treating them as a relationship rather than a simple task list. He explores how most goal-setting systems fail because they skip the “dating” phase and rush straight into commitment, leaving you disengaged and directionless. The solution is surprisingly simple. By dedicating just 30 minutes each week to review, reflect, and set intentions, you can maintain a strong connection with your goals. Jay highlights a powerful tool called the 411: a one-page system that aligns your weekly, monthly, and annual goals. He also shares personal anecdotes, like how weekly date nights with his wife strengthened their marriage, to emphasize the power of small, consistent habits over time. The same principle applies to your goals. Start building a relationship with your goals today—your future self will thank you. Challenge of the Week: Time to start dating your goals! Block off 30 minutes on your calendar every week for a goal check-in. Use this time to review your progress, evaluate what’s working, and set intentions for the week ahead. Consistency is the key to staying in love with your goals and achieving extraordinary results. *** To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: the1thing.com/pods. This is the first episode of February. And guess what also happens in February? Some of us love it,

0:24.8

some of us hate it, but yes, it's Valentine's Day. Whatever the case, we're going to talk about

0:30.0

having a relationship with your goals in honor of Valentine's Day. Now, what does that even mean?

0:36.9

I think for most of us, if we're being really

0:39.6

honest, if you had to post your status of your relationship to Facebook around your goals,

0:45.5

you'd probably say it's complicated. Because that's what it is. It is complicated. Because none of us

0:52.0

have been taught kind of a proven way, not just to set goals,

0:55.9

like, that's fine, but how do we actually have a relationship with them? How do we date them?

1:01.0

How do we build trust and relationship that we're not only going to do the things we say

1:05.0

we're going to do for those goals? We're going to be there for them. What does that even look like? Most of us start the year, we're all

1:10.8

excited. Yes, I've got my big goals. You might share them. You might share them with your team.

1:15.5

You might share them on social. And we know that life shows up. Even on an average year, people get

1:22.4

sick. Job descriptions change. The competitive market, the landscape changes, and over time, we all have a

1:30.0

tendency to drift a little bit. We lose track of some of the things that we said we were going to do,

1:35.1

and if you drift long enough, you will lose track altogether. And what happens then is you come

1:41.4

around to January of next year, and it's a little bit like a

1:44.7

merry-go-round. You've gone all the way around the world in this big circle, and you're kind of

1:49.1

starting at the same place again. We didn't do all the things or even any of the things we

1:54.4

thought we were going to do. Doesn't mean we had a bad year, but we didn't really stay engaged

1:59.6

with our goals. If that sounds like you,

2:02.4

and frankly, in our business, we see lots and lots of folks that are high achievers that often
