Summary

Punished Not For Your Anger, But By Your Anger

We will not be punished for our anger, but we might be punished by our anger, if we aren’t careful:

Consequences of uncontrolled anger: While you won't face external punishment for expressing anger, the emotion itself can lead to negative consequences. It can damage relationships, cloud judgment, and hinder personal growth. In essence, your anger becomes its own punishment.

Inner turmoil and self-inflicted harm: Unprocessed anger can fester internally, leading to stress, anxiety, and even physical health problems. It's like carrying a burning torch - you're the one getting scorched.

Learning and growth from anger: While anger can be destructive, it can also be a powerful motivator for change. Recognizing the source of your anger and using it to address underlying issues can lead to personal growth and resilience. In this sense, facing your anger head-on is not punitive, but empowering.

Welcome to the happiness podcast. I'm Dr. Robert Puff. Anger. It's a real complicated emotion. One of the hardest I think for many of us to understand

0:18.9

or to learn how to deal with appropriately. Thankfully, we've own anger and those of others.

0:23.8

So I'd like to say some good things about anger as far as how to appropriately

0:30.6

deal with anger, our own anger and those of others. So I like to start with just

0:35.2

quoting some very wise sayings I found on anger. The first one comes from Mark

0:41.1

Twain. He wrote,

0:43.0

Anger is an asset that can do more harm to the vessel

0:47.0

in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.

0:51.0

And then from China we have, ucius who wrote, when anger rises, think of the consequences.

0:59.0

And then from Greece we have, Aristotle wrote,

1:03.6

Anybody can become angry.

1:05.5

That is easy.

1:07.2

But to be angry with the right person

1:10.0

and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose and in the right way.

1:18.0

That is not within everyone's power and is not easy. And lastly from India we have the Buddha and he wrote,

1:27.0

you will not be punished for your anger,

1:30.0

you will be punished by your anger.

1:33.0

Anger is just an emotion.

1:36.0

It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to be bad.

1:40.0

It's just an emotion.

1:41.0

I mean, look at young children, Very young. They can get angry. Are they bad? Are they evil? Are they demonic? No. They're just angry. The negative consequences of anger come when we express our anger, whether verbally,

1:56.8

physically, or in any way. Or if we hang on to our anger too long and it causes us distress or illness. We're going to talk about
