Summary

How many times have you turned to Netflix, shopping, or a glass of wine to avoid feeling something uncomfortable? This is a pattern so many of us get stuck in. In this episode, I’m joined by my best friend, Master Certified Life Coach Rachel Hart, to explore why we do this and what actually helps us change it.

This episode is the perfect starting point for understanding why we numb our emotions in the first place, and why learning to feel them instead of avoiding them is the key to creating lasting change in your life.

All right, my friends, if January was all about setting big goals and accomplishing things this year,

0:06.2

February is all about what do we need to work through in order to actually be able to do that?

0:11.5

And the biggest block to us accomplishing our goals and creating the lives we want and feeling confident in our own skin is not external circumstances or anything we're personally

0:22.3

lacking. It's actually at fundamental bottom, the unwillingness to feel our own emotions and our

0:30.0

fear of our own emotions, our resistance to our own emotions, the reactivity we have to our own

0:36.1

emotions. It's that reactivity that makes our emotions

0:39.7

feel so much worse, lasts so much longer, and leads us to act in counterproductive ways. So for the next

0:45.4

couple of episodes, we're doing some deep dives into what is going on when we try to avoid our

0:50.4

emotions and how we can learn to allow, accept, and feel them in really concrete ways.

0:56.8

Because I know that when we say feel your feelings, a lot of us don't actually know what that means.

1:01.6

So we're starting off this week with a replay of a great episode that I did with my friend Rachel

1:06.9

Hart a couple of years ago. Rachel is a coach who helps people change the relationship

1:12.1

with their drinking. But because of that, she is incredible at helping people deal with their

1:17.6

emotions because, of course, a lot of the reason that we use numbing out behaviors like drinking or

1:23.1

anything else, gambling, Netflix, shopping, smoking, eating, whatever is because we don't know how

1:28.4

to cope with our feelings, right? And so we try to physically impact our bodies to change the

1:33.3

way they feel. So this conversation with Rachel is a really great grounding and kind of

1:38.7

revisiting or getting up to speed for the first time, if you never heard it before, about why and how we react to our emotions and what that does to us.

1:47.2

Next week, we've got a new episode coming all about one of my favorite techniques for dealing with our emotions better, which is called microdosing your negative emotions.

1:56.0

So these two episodes work really well in concert.

1:58.7

You want to listen to this one this week to kind of prime your

2:01.0

brain and get yourself thinking about your emotional life in a different way. And then next week,
