Summary

There is a strong ‘anti-diet’ movement at the moment, and that’s great, diet culture has damaged the wellbeing of many people world wide, but has it gone too far? Have we considered how the human brain works and how we are wired as people? Has intuitive eating got the right message, or has it been taken out of context to allow anti-diet zealots to have a soap box to shout on? Be prepared for a long and deep show on how the human brain works, nutrition science, male & female attractiveness, body shapes, human health, biology and more.

Hey everyone Benkum Radio episode number 459 I am excited for today because this is a

0:06.5

conversation that I see a lot at the moment online and there's a lot of people fighting

0:12.3

hard on kind of both sides of the fence and this

0:17.6

sorry my first encounter of this was I think it was back like last year at SFN maybe even the year before so

0:25.0

SFN is the Scottish Expo that I will be at this year so if you're in

0:29.7

Scotland or close to Scotland come and say hello and listen to the talks I'm doing.

0:34.0

But anyway I was on a panel and we were talking about nutrition and kind of diet and stuff

0:38.8

and one of the panelists said well you know I just I just eat intuitively I just sort of like eat what I

0:46.4

fancy and you know I just kind of listen to my body and if I want something I just eat it you know I obviously try and eat

0:54.3

quite healthy foods and yeah so my advice is just try and listen to your body and

0:59.0

do that and I sort of interjected at that point in the debate and I said you know with respect what if

1:05.8

someone doesn't understand food like you're a nutritionist you really

1:09.3

understand food you understand what kind of is potentially healthy and not, you have quite strong

1:16.8

awareness of what the calorie intake is a lot of foods, you spend time listening to your

1:22.3

body, what if someone doesn't know all of that

1:24.2

information so calorie counting is then a way to sort of navigate understanding

1:29.6

that and we got into quite a heated argument and it was actually really odd because I was sitting there thinking how do you not appreciate the value of what calories can teach someone and what you kind of need as an individual and then she could really sort of identify with my perspective saying that, you know,

1:46.9

calories are stressful and they're causing people anxiety and we need to just listen to our bodies and just try and eat good food.

1:54.3

And it was really weird and this individual actually has been such an anti-proposent of mine that she wouldn't even come to another event and talk with me because of it.

2:08.0

And I don't think that's obviously a good thing because I think we need open debate, we need open discourse to be able to

2:14.8

speak about this kind of stuff and create some kind of middle ground and clarity, but that was kind of my first

2:20.0

sort of intro with intuitive eating. And then it's come up quite a bit online and I
