anyway a couple of weeks ago fortnight ago I spoke about shift workers and night workers and the impact of food, its impact on sleep, and a couple of comments came in on social media, expanding the conversation which is absolutely perfect

is exactly what I want so I thought I'd use this podcast today to expand on this

because someone brought up a really kind of interesting strategy around night work and this lady said what she does

She gets up in the morning has a cup of coffee has a really good breakfast and then doesn't eat for the whole of her shift.

So she gets on shift, gets busy and finishes her shift, has a nice big meal and literally just sort know sort of crashes and go to bed or whatever and I thought that was a really interesting

strategy but I thought there was a couple of caveats from my experience as a nutritionist as to how that could actually work, how that could be executed.

Now in my early days of my health journey, one of the things I was big into was low-carb eating.

I felt that that was the way to achieve my goals.

You know, carbs were being labeled as this bad thing at the time which they are not.

But one of the benefits I found of a low-carb diet was its ability to really

stabilize your blood glucose levels and this is why quite often when people work with

diabetics we see them going on to low-carb diets because your management of

glucose is a lot better. So let's take this situation where this lady's going

to a night shift and she's going to have a big breakfast, not eat during the

shift and then eat afterwards.

I would personally make that a really decent, moderate protein, high-fat, low-carb meal. So personally what I find is if I have a low-carb meal, my feeling of low blood sugar

level coming on before my next meal is really minor. Now the opposite to that, if I had a high-carb meal, my feeling of needing to eat, so having

low blood sugar level, is really aggressive.

So for example, if I was to have six egg omelet, loads of butter or coconut oil added and a few low-car veggies like mixed in there, you know five-ish hours later, I'd be like, yeah, I'm a little bit hungry, I think I could eat,
