And this is Tom Myers. And on today's show, we're going to answer a foundational question about New York City.

Perhaps one of the most basic questions that we could possibly ask.

Possibly, right. Over the years, we've explained the origins of so many New York City place names.

We have, like, this is one of the things we do best. We went from Wall Street to Harlem, Greenwich Village, to Brooklyn.

But today, we're going even bigger. We're going to examine how New York, the city,

the state, the place, how New York got its name. And to answer it, we'll be speaking to one of our

heroes on this show, the best-selling author Russell Shorto, who's out with a brand new book

called Taking Manhattan.

But first, before we dial up Russell Shorto at his office at the New York Historical,

we have a tiny bit of business to discuss. Greg, you and I are throwing a Gilded Age weekend

getaway in New York City in a couple of months.
