Stanford Bridge had been a nightmare.

Thousands dead, and untold numbers have wounded.

And the fallout from that was just beginning.

All over Britain, all over Europe, families would slowly be learning the fate of their loved

ones.

Word was now spreading across England, up to Orkney, out to Flanders and Norway.

And at home in Northumbria, a once peaceful river crossing was now a heap of carnage.

There were so many bodies lying on the bank that their bones would be visible for generations.

It was an absolutely horrific and entirely avoidable catastrophe.

Perhaps the only solace to be found was that the man who was responsible, Tostig, had been

among the dead.
