King Harold, his Husk Arles and the Ferd of Wessex were driving north as fast as they

could.

And Harold was terrified of what William the Bastard was amassing in Normandy.

So it's hard to imagine that anything could have convinced him to leave the southern

coast undefended.

Unless he already knew that the north had been lost.

Now granted, given the poor nature of our records, it is possible that Harold felt the weather

had turned enough towards the winter that he finally felt free to deal with the dumpster

fire that his brother was trying to light with his new Norwegian friends.

And in that case, perhaps he began his march north without even knowing about the situation

at Fulford, but I doubt it.

But whatever Harold knew, or didn't know, in the second half of September of 1066, he

and his army were riding hard for York.
