I'm Erin Scala and here's our show today. Oh, Possibly from Northern Italy and Veneto and growing under a variety of different names from northern to mid- Italy, Verdikio has made

itself at home in the Marke.

In the Marke, Verdeo can have a unique symbiosis with Malvizia and Trebiano,

where the grapes in Trio can create a unique, mysterious, and age-worthy wine.

It can also be bottled on its own and can be truly ethereal

with some age. Verdiqio has been confused with Trebiano often in the past, but

especially with DNA profiling, the story of Verdichio is becoming ever clearer.

In fact, Verdichio's past helps clarify some of the passions and motivations of people living in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Verdiio moved around north and central Italy during a few centuries when the Italian peninsula suffered

multiple plague outbreaks.

Some outbreaks would be small hitting a few hundred people in a localized area. And when an outbreak happened, little spots,

lentil-like spots, would show up on the skin, and then lymph nodes would swell,

and rarely would anyone live beyond the fifth day of catching the disease.

Usually if one person in the house contracted the plague,

everyone else in the house would catch it

and die around the same time.

It was just devastating.

Outbreaks swept across Europe,

leaving hundreds of thousands dead in the wake.
