I'm just back from a trip to the wilderness

In the Sierra mountains of California and every time you open your eyes

There's a site to behold

An image of beauty

From a distance a mountain of solid granite almost a hundred million years old

Juts up from the valley floor

Up close the roots of a newborn tree

Trying to find purchase

maneuvering around and over and through rock until it finds soil and

And in doing so

draws an infinitely complex picture of life

Yes, the world is a beautiful place

But we also know

That the world can be a horrible place a wretched place

And in the military I was usually sent to the bad places

And in a way I was sent to those bad places to

Deal with them

To keep them away from us
