0:35.7	In particular, three places in Manhattan, Lower East Side,
0:39.5	where people have been noshing on salamis, herrings, and conishes for over a hundred years.

0:53.5	The Lower East Side of today is a collection of cocktail lounges and restaurants and condos and luxury hotels.
1:01.3	What it used to be a hundred years ago, actually, what it used to be 10 years ago, has almost completely vanished.
1:09.6	About a hundred years ago, this was the center of immigrant Jewish culture in New York, a really rich mix of Eastern European cultures.
1:18.2	The blocks from Houston Street down to Canal Street on the East Side of Manhattan,
1:22.8	were filled with vastly overcrowded tenements.
1:25.7	Around the late 19th century, in fact, the population density of this area was three times what it is today.
1:33.6	But there was also a very unique, adapted lifestyle to this place that preserved the older European customs,
1:39.4	but tailored it for life in the big city.
