Summary

Some of the worst advice you’ve received about porn may have come from ... your pastor? Yikes! Most pastors—understandably—aren't trained in sexual addiction or the impact of sexual trauma in marriage, and some of the popular Christian advice espoused in this area has done more harm than good. In this episode, Juli sits down with Mark & Rosie Makinney to debunk misconceptions about pornography and offer hope, encouragement, and practical tools for healing. Mark and Rosie have overcome porn addiction in their own marriage; since then, Rosie founded Fight for Love Ministries and Mark has become a certified sexual addiction therapist. This conversation is for pastors, husbands, wives, and anyone who has walked beside a loved one through porn addiction in marriage.

Guests: Mark Makinney, CSAT and Rosie Makinney

This podcast is an outreach of authentic intimacy, a ministry dedicated to reclaiming God's

One of the reasons you hear me use the word reclaim so often when we're talking about sexuality

0:20.0

is because really throughout the

0:22.3

course of our lives most of us have swallowed a lot of lies about our sexuality and that includes

0:28.1

some things we've actually heard from the church. An insufficient theology of sex and the fact

0:33.5

that we've been so squeamish to address sexuality have really hurt Christian couples in

0:38.2

the area of pornography use within marriage. So today, I sat down with Mark and Rosie McKinney

0:44.2

to talk about some of the misconceptions about porn use in marriage that you may have heard

0:49.0

in pastoral counseling or even explicitly from the pulpit. Now, let me just say, I am not here to beat up on pastors.

That's not my heart behind this conversation.

Most pastors have little to know training on how to address issues like pornography or sexual

1:03.8

dysfunction in marriage.

1:05.4

And so they tend to avoid these topics, or they just pass down what little advice they've

1:09.7

encountered over the years. Some of that

1:11.9

advice might be good, but other has actually proven to be destructive. So in today's conversation,

1:17.8

Rosie and Mark are going to share some of the myths around porn and marriage that many Christian

1:22.7

leaders have believed. A few of them are the way to avoid pornography is to make sure a husband's sexual

1:29.1

needs are met. There's a myth that porn-free marriages just aren't possible, or in the

1:34.4

myth that what a wife doesn't know won't hurt her. And of course, there's a lie out there that
