Summary

In this episode we interview John and Brooke McLay. John served for 14 years as an employee of the LDS Church Education System (CES). In this capacity he served as: a seminary teacher and principal, an institute teacher and director, a BYU Education Week speaker and an EFY Director. John also served as a member of a stake high counsel, and was serving in a bishopric during the months leading up to his decision to leave the LDS Church. John and Brooke resigned their membership of the LDS Church in August of 2011. This is their story.

together kind of served in the LDS Church Education System for 14 years and a few

months ago decided that their integrity impelled them to resign from the church. And so we're

having a big long discussion about a very interesting and meaningful discussion about that

whole process for them and why someone would leave the LDS Church, especially in a position

of such prominence and high visibility. And so where I'd like to turn now is to so each

of you sort of in parallel got to the place where you said the church isn't what it claims

to be and I can no longer believe in it the same way that I did. What I'd like to explore

now is the journey from that point to resigning your membership. And you know, I don't want

to spend hours on that, but I mean the extent to which we can and let's say 20 minutes,

let's just talk about that process. Okay. So yeah. Tell me what it's what's you're sitting

there? You're in CES, you're an institute teacher, you're high profile, you're the spouse

of someone who is all those things. You're loving your experience, you love the church,

can't all of a sudden for you, it's not true anymore. Yeah. What's that like? Yeah, good

question. That's a very good question. Well, it wasn't all of a sudden. It didn't happen

overnight. And I think I've mentioned that I was kind of reserving the right to and even

had the expectation that I would sift through this as I had in the past when doubts had come
