Summary

In this episode we interview John and Brooke McLay. John served for 14 years as an employee of the LDS Church Education System (CES). In this capacity he served as: a seminary teacher and principal, an institute teacher and director, a BYU Education Week speaker and an EFY Director. John also served as a member of a stake high counsel, and was serving in a bishopric during the months leading up to his decision to leave the LDS Church. John and Brooke resigned their membership of the LDS Church in August of 2011. This is their story.

Well, this has been wonderful so far. We've talked about the early years in the church.

it was for you as a couple and as a family. Now we're going to just spend at least an hour

And so since John, I think maybe both of you have things that stretch back in your childhood

and so let's just start there. What seeds of doubt or concerns sprouted and talk us

through the process if you're getting the point where you would ever want to resign from

the church? You know, let alone not believe.

Yeah, sure. The earliest, I think, doubt that I can really say I'm having issues was

as a missionary in my first area and it was specifically about Joseph Smith. And I wrote

that off at the time as unpleasant encounters with people of other faiths as I tried to

talk about him and evil. You know, I would have, it was the devil, but...
