Summary
We talked about some of the strangest and coolest research topics in endurance sports for this episode! Basically, the science discussions went long, so we just ran with it.
The main discussion was on how to stop cramps, laying out 10 theories. But put on your tin foil hats, because we think the cramping conspiracy runs deep. Our theory: cramping is connected to fatigue resistance is connected to all endurance performance, and thinking about cramp prevention might revolutionize all training theory even for athletes who never cramp. IT GOES DEEP!
We also talked about a new missing link heat study, connecting altitude blood changes to long-term passive heat training. It was especially weird because the researchers were unsure of exactly why it happened. Those are the most fun study moments!
Other topics: very short-term changes in fat max and fat oxidation (featuring the wildest figure we have seen in a long time), the difficulty of studies due to large error bars and small effect sizes, the crossover point in metabolic research, the incredible Dark Wizard documentary, and a question on relationships.
For a clue about what was censored, here’s the hint: I caught mommy [bleeping] [bleepa blaus].
We love you all! HUZZAH!

| 0:04.0 | Happy Tuesday. |
| 0:05.0 | It's Tuesday. And we are swimming in some veggie sticks on this Tuesday. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I don't feel great about this one. So you're gone this weekend. You went with Leo back to where you grew up in Pennsylvania. It was a really special trip. It was so much fun. fun. It was my first time traveling with Leo solo in a minute, and we hit a blast. |
| 0:22.8 | Like, I feel like he's actually at that age where it's enjoyable to travel with him, and it was great. Yeah. And you said you have do aid onset muscle soreness in your thumbs right now. I do. I played field hockey. And I went to the turf and like went to my high school and they had this box, this bin of like 100 balls. And as soon as I hit two or three of |
| 0:38.5 | them, I was like, I got to keep going. |
| 0:40.5 | You just cannot stop. And so I probably hit like 75 balls. And now my thumbs are sore. What a tricky time is you're waiting to exercise until you get another heart test done. |
| 0:56.9 | So right now you see 100 balls. You're like, I've got to go. I can't stop. I mean, I feel like at any time in my life, there's like this like true competitor within me. And as soon as you put me on that field, I'm like, I just can't stop. As soon as she sees balls. I'm like, it's a dick, ding. |
| 1:11.2 | Help me. |
| 1:27.8 | And now, I mean, it's legitimately. It actually, like, makes me smile that my thumbs are sore because it reminds me of just like a prior self. Yeah. Well, that's beautiful. What's not beautiful is while you were gone, I was with Ollie, who's our younger kid. and because I had a lot of free time, |
| 1:29.9 | it's like, okay, how can I be the best parent possible? |
| 1:29.9 | I'm like, I, how can I be the best parent possible? |
| 1:44.2 | I'm like, I'm going to make their nutrition just a little bit better. Okay, I love this, by the way, because you had this thought, as I was in Philadelphia, feeding Leo, like soft pretzels and Rita's water ice. Well, those are great. The problem is when our kids are eating Fritos for their meals, which, you know, obviously, |
| 2:02.1 | fritos are part of a healthy diet, but not the entire healthy diet. And so I ordered like $300 worth of what I thought were healthy snacks. And most of them were. Okay, you texted me and you're like, Megan, I got veggie sticks. I got yogurt pouches. I got fruit pouches. And I was a little bit like, oh, I'm excited to see what shows up here. Well, we uplift all food in this house, but today, Megan went to the |
| 2:06.3 | veggie stick thing. And I just assumed, because it was veggie stick, it was like veggies. |
| 2:09.9 | You ordered zesty ranch, baby. Yeah, of course. I was ruining the ingredients to you this morning, |
| 2:16.3 | and it was like tomato powder. No, no, tomato powder |
| 2:19.5 | wouldn't be bad. Potato starch is the first ingredient. Not potatoes, potato starch. So I feel like the |
| 2:26.2 | veggie stick. The veggie in that is doing a lot of extra work. So I don't know if I |
| 2:31.6 | accomplished my full goal, but I'm still proud of myself for trying, Megan. |
| 2:51.1 | I feel like veggie sticks are veggie signaling. Yes, sure. Putting it out there and you fell for it. I did. But you know what? I love that you thought about this and you're like, I'm going to invest in their nutrition. We're going to mix some fruit and vegetables into their lives. And, you know, potato starch just goes hard sometimes. Yeah. Before we know, we're going to just be blending Fritos with Diet Coke. And that's going to be their meals. Actually, not |
