Summary

We had some HYPOTHESES for this amazing episode! The main topics all revolved around fatigue resistance (often called “durability” in the literature), which we think is the most exciting area of training theory and physiology. It started with Rachel Entrekin’s legendary overall win at the Cocodona 250, an event that explores some of the strangest and coolest parts of endurance.

Our big theory: what we’re seeing in these wild ultras is directly connected to what we see in short distances. A new study looked at fatigue resistance variations between men and women, with some shocking results. We expand the scope to talk about the literature generally before going to some ideas for how it all might relate to the central nervous system.

...And how it relates to fueling. You could probably guess that we were going to talk about carbs.

Plus, we answer questions about the culture of fueling for young athletes and feeling good after long runs!

This one starts with a description of Megan’s health journey. The hottest vacation is apparently a 3-day stay in Boulder Community Hospital. Things are scary, but we’re holding onto hope for the future.

We love you all! HUZZAH!

Happy Tuesday.

It's Tuesday.

0:05.9

And we're bringing our best gems on this Tuesday. Our best gems. What are you talking about? I'm holding up my wrist. Oh, yeah. You got me a Mother's Day gift. It is beautiful. We got it up at the farmer's market in Netherlands. I did ask Megan yesterday. I'm like, is it okay that I didn't get you anything from Mother's Day?

0:20.1

I was like, absolutely.

0:22.7

Okay, so we ended up going to the farmer's market and you were picking out bracelets. I was like, Megan, treat yourself, girl. I stepped up. Those bracelets over there are beautiful. And I was like, look at you assessing women's jewelry. Yeah, this is my jam. I know this so well. So we were picking through all the bracelets. I got a tiny ass wrist. And so it kind of narrowed the

selection of bracelets. And they all had these like circular, what do you, I guess beads. And they all mean something. We really did not look into this much. And so we picked one out. I was like, I think this one's beautiful. You were like, I agree, Megan. That's my favorite. The main meaning you wanted was, is the sexiest fuck? And it was. It was so sexy. But as we were what is the meaning of this one? And it's mostly green orbs, I would call them, around the outside. And then one beautiful pink little guy hanging out in the middle. And so he brought it up and we asked them and they said, the green ones are for healing and the pink one is for heart. And boom, I almost cried on the

spot. Heart healing. Okay, so we're talking about that because last week, you may have heard some rumblings

1:21.8

as we recorded. We were like, oh, our life is a crap storm and all this other stuff. And I was making Megan record that right before we went into the ER for a heart checkup that, I mean, honestly, it went about as well as it could have, but we're still in a really uncertain place. It was a Sunday morning and I was existing in Chesapeen. And you're like, Megan, I think we should record the podcast now. And I was like, what are you talking about?

1:45.1

The reason you were saying, what are you talking about is because you thought we were going to get out earlier, not be in there for three days. I was convinced. I was like, I'm going to walk into the emergency room. I'm going to get a cardiac MRI. I'm going to do due diligence on my heart. And then I'm going to leave.

1:57.2

And I'm going to be back in time for our Monday or Tuesday podcast recording.

2:00.2

And somehow, you little bitch, you knew.

2:02.9

Well, in fairness, I was the one that was forcing you to go to the ER. leave and I'm going to be back in time for our Monday or Tuesday podcast recording and somehow

2:00.8

you little bitch you knew.

2:02.7

Well, in fairness, I was the one that was forcing you to go to the ER in the first place. That is true. That is true. But I got to get my girl on the street. And you kept dropping little inklings of it. You're like, this has been a hard week. This is a hard time. And I was like, damn, David, I'm going to be fine.

2:15.6

I'm going to be great.

2:16.5

Hey, dirty, baby, I got your money.

2:19.7

Here's your podcast.

2:20.7

Don't worry. Well, actually is a thing, like, if we miss a Tuesday podcast, it's kind of a big deal. We've never done it. But we know that from other podcasts that you really don't want to miss a week. And so we're committed to it, but we should really have one banked at this point. Well, we had a lot of fun, though. It was a lot of fun. It was a good way to go out into the emergency room.

2:36.5

And somehow, even when you to it, but we should really have one banked at this point. Well, we had a lot of fun, though. It was a lot of fun. It was a good way to go out into the emergency room.
